She ran a great race and tracked down a horse that earned an easy lead under the guidance of top rider at the meet, Jose Lezcano. Performing before a Preakness crowd of more than 112,000 at Pimlico Race Course, the 4-year-old filly, ACINONYX, earned black type by finishing third in the $65,000 Skipat Stakes. Rating in fourth for most of the six-furlong journey under jockey Ramon Dominguez, Acinonyx moved up steadily before settling for third, beaten less than three lengths by the victorious Akronism. “She was gaining with every stride,” said Dominguez later told the filly’s trainer, Mark Shuman.
